Memorial High School Reviews

We have one son who just graduated and another that is still in school. Parent involvement, teachers, avalible programs are all outstanding!

As others have already mentioned, Memorial High School is an excellent school for students who are college bound. However, even the academically gifted are glad to get out due to the disruptive and violent students who also attend. This school is too big, with around 2000 students. Even with in-school 'neighborhoods', the number of students to principals/staff is too great. Teachers do try to keep parents informed. However, this school offers nothing to those students who are 'average' or academically challenged. Where are the programs that prepare students for the work world? A large number of students would do well elsewhere. Too many 'graduate' without a real education, if they are not college material. This is disgusting. A high school diploma means nothing if it only indicates that a student attended the school for a number of years, and perhaps did not even attend classes for much of the time.

Academics is very strong. MANY different AP subjects offered. Students wanting to take hard classes are grouped together.

Oh my god, I LOVE IT HERE!!!! it's the greatest!!! the school work aspect of it is kinda hard, but everything's great!

Memorial High School is a good school. 'School' is what you make it; teachers are overworked and underpaid and parents who complain are just that: complainers. Engaging those are who are not interested is difficult and at times impossible because of attitude. Teachers should be blessed often for the 'marathon' they is run each day, the attention that is given to students and for their giving up of personal and family time for their career. Their pay should be doubled for what they do for our sons and daughters. Parent

Memorial is the best school in the United States of America! It has excellent education and athletic departments that give children a great head start in life...Even before college!!!

The first poster is right on the mark - if you have a child that is identified by the school as an AP level student, the academics are pretty good. For every other student, the education is definitely sub-par, especially compared to suburban schools. Our experience with faculty is that they are largely indifferent, maintain little or no control, and often do a sloppy job in the classroom. We moved after the sophomore year just to get into a better school situation.

Academic programming is strong with excellent teachers in core courses (Science, Math, English, Social Studies/History). The school environment is friendly, and it offers a wide variety of fine arts and business/technology courses. We are not involved in the athletic department; but if you are interested, there are plenty of sports and other extracurricular activities to choose from.

I think Memorial is a very strong school. The top 5% of students regularly are admitted to Stanford, Brown, Harvard, etc. 15-20% of the student body make it into UW-Madison and JMM has tons of AP classes. The previous poster is correct that there is a large gap between the good students and poor students. I am a former good student that realizes that Memorial provided me with an excellent foundation for my engineering education at UW-Madison, and I would highly reccommend it. Memorial provides the opportunity to have a very diverse student body, but it does focus on the students who want to learn, not the ones counting the minutes until they can drop out to become the future gas station attendents or McDonald's employees of the world. The teachers on the whole are excellent as well, especially in science and math.

At Memorial, great attention is given to the academically superior students. Unfortunately, this is done at the expense of all the other students. Little effort is made to engage 'indifferent' students and to try interest them in learning. Much emphasis on hard science and math class -- little in the way of humanities or liberal arts. (Drama/arts programs are almost non-existent.) Memorial is a very hostile environment for most students. School would probably benefit from integrating a 'service-learning' component into its curriculum and get away from the focus on producing Merit Scholars.
